Representation and Disbility

What does "disabled" mean?
According to dictionary.com, it means having a physical or mental condition that limits movements, senses or activities. It doesn't just mean being in a weel-chair, no, there are may disabilities out there, physical and mental. Here are a few examples of visible and invisible disabilities:

  • Visible- M.S (Multiple Scleroses)
  • Visible- Autism
  • Visible- Asthma
  • Invisible- Cancer
  • Invisible- Hearing impairment
  • Invisible- Dyslexia
The list is almost endless. According to researchers 1 in 8 people are disabled, that makes disabled people a very significant minority group in our society. The media has touched on this research to show many people on how disabled people feel and the way they cope or can't cope with it. If a disability is featured on a soap, like EastEnders for example, at the end they have HELPLINES for people to phone up.

Find examples of a range of representations of disabled people, ideally in the news

There has been a T.V show on Channel 4 that showed secret footage of the care- homes and on how the careers were treating them in an appalling manner.
There has been other reports on similar activities, but sometimes it's not all doom and gloom. If a disabled person has been featured on real T.V, then what I've notice is the reporter is highly patronising towards them, they can obviously tell- so most of the time they sarcastically snap back at the reporter.

When the man with a face impediment is in the town watching everyone look at him, the camera zooms into his face, mainly to see his paranoia and anger towards everyone eying him up. When he gets into the army building, the camera switches to

Secondly, respond to the following question and post this on your blog as well.   With detailed reference to specific examples from one extract only, discuss the ways in which the extract constructs representations of disability using the following:
